Joseph Florimond Loubat

Joseph Florimond Loubat ( born January 31, 1831 in New York; † March 1, 1927 ) was an American philanthropist.

Life

Loubat came from a wealthy family, whose ancestors had immigrated from France. He interrupted his studies in New York and finished it later very successfully at the University of Paris.

Financially independent Loubat traveled all over Europe and was a welcome guest at many governments. He met Pope Leo XIII. know at an audience in 1892 and the following year this knighted him the " Duc de Loubat ".

Loubat donated especially for schools and universities; inter alia, he had set up chairs and financed it throughout his life. Loubat founded named after him Loubat Prize, was awarded the outstanding 1913-1958 Publications of the Social Sciences. The Columbia University oversaw this foundation and also bestowed this award.

Joseph Florimond Loubat died at the age of 96 years on March 1, 1927 in New York and found his final resting place.
