Joseph M. Schmondiuk

Joseph Michael Schmondiuk, DD; Ukrainian: Йосиф Шмондюк, ( born August 6, 1912 in Wall, Pennsylvania, USA; † 25 December 1978) was Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the United States and Archbishop of Philadelphia.

Life

Joseph Michael Schmondiuk was the second of four children, his father Michael Schmodniuk 1909 was migrated from western Ukraine and Mary Schmondiuk ( born BOCIA ) married. At the age of ten years, the boy lost his parents, who died due to severe flu epidemic in 1919. Joseph and his brother Michael was recorded in Philadelphia in the orphanage of the "Sisters of St. Basil the Great ." His youngest brother Emil Johannes was taken from the family in care Braddock, his sister, also a lot of flu victim.

Priest time

Schmondiuk completed his education in 1930 with the Abitur. On October 11, 1930, he moved to Rome and began studying theology. He studied at the Angelicum, the University of Propaganda Fide in Rome and was housed at the Seminary of the Pontifical Ukrainian College of St. Josaphat. His ordination he received on March 29, 1936, the same year he completed his theological studies with a degree in theology. After his ordination he returned to the United States and worked in Aliquippa six years as pastor. This was followed by pastorates in Rochester (NY ), Passic (NJ ), and Hamtramck (Michigan). Pope Pius XII. awarded him in recognition of his outstanding construction work for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the United States, the title of " Pontifical chamberlain " ( Monsignor ).

Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia

On August 8, 1956 he was appointed by Pope Pius XII. auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia and at the same time appointed him titular bishop of Zeugma in Syria.
