Joseph Marchand

Joseph Marchand ( born August 17, 1803 in Passavant, † November 30, 1835 in Saigon ) was a French missionary in Vietnam, a member of the Paris Missionary and saint and martyr of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life and work

Marchand, born in the French Passavant, joined in 1828 at the age of 25 years in the seminary of the Paris mission. His ordination took place on April 4, 1829.

From 1833 he worked at the Vietnamese Lê Văn - - Khôi revolt under Lê Văn Khôi, son of the Lê Văn Duyet with. Khôi and Marchand declared to overthrow Minh Mang, the second emperor of the Vietnamese Nguyễn Dynasty, and instead My Duong, the son of Mang's older brother Nguyễn Phúc use Canh, who was Catholic. Marchands Khôis intention was instead Minh Mang to install a Catholic emperor. They conquered the citadel of Saigon and held them with their troops for two years under its control.

After completion of the revolt Joseph Marchand was arrested in 1835 in Saigon and, tortured and executed by pliers tore pieces of meat from the body. This form of execution is also known as Lingchi and was widespread in East and Southeast Asia.

Marchand is one of the Martyrs of Vietnam. He was canonized for this martyrdom on May 27, 1900 and blessed on June 9, 1988 by Pope John Paul II. His feast day is November 30.
