Joseph Martin Reichard

Joseph Martin Reichard ( born September 23, 1803 in Untergrehweiler, † May 14, 1872 in Philadelphia ) was a German politician and revolutionary.

Life

Reichard was a son of the notary and the Mayor of Speyer Johann Franz Reichard (1765-1838) and his wife Maria Jacobina seuffert. He attended high school in Speyer and studied from winter semester 1821/22 law in Heidelberg, Würzburg, Erlangen, Dijon and Paris. In Heidelberg he was a member of the Corps in 1821 Rhenaniastraße in Erlangen 1823 he was a member of the fraternity Arminia Erlangen. In 1826 he appeared as a lawyer in the law firm of Frankenthaler lawyer Georg Jacob Stockinger, with whom he came in contact with liberal ideas. In 1831 he became a notary in Kusel, 1837 in Speyer ( until 1849 ). In Speyer, he also belonged to the City Council.

Reichard was involved early in the democratic movement. On April 30, 1848 he was elected for the constituency Kirchheimbolanden in the Frankfurt National Assembly, where he belonged to the " Club Thunder Mountain " on the top left. 1849 Reichard was one of the principal operator of the Palatinate uprising ( Constitution Campaign ) and was elected in May 1849 in the "State Committee for Defense and implementation of the constitution " and on May 17, 1849 President and War Minister of the Provisional Government of the Palatinate. After the suppression of the uprising, he fled to Switzerland and on to the United States. The Palatine Court of Appeal in Zweibrücken in 1851 sentenced him in absentia for high treason and death.

In Philadelphia Reichard settled down as owner, then worked again as a notary and became an American citizen. In 1850 he was co-editor of the daily newspaper " The representatives of the people ". Most recently, he lived as a farmer in Wilkes -Barre (Pennsylvania). Reichard was involved in social and charitable work in many ways. He was a member of the Committee for the establishment of a German Hospital in Philadelphia, Member of the Board of the German Society of Philadelphia and a member of the German Association for the support of distressed emigrants.
