Joseph Mitchell (writer)

Joseph Mitchell ( born July 27, 1908 in Fairmont, North Carolina; † 24 May 1996 New York City ) was an American journalist and writer, and wrote, among other things for the New Yorker. He is best known for his carefully written portraits of eccentrics to people on the margins of society, particularly in and around New York City.

Life

Mitchell was on the farm of his maternal grandparents near Iona, North Carolina born, the son of Averette Nance and Elizabeth A. Parker Mitchell. The family that worked in the cotton and tobacco trade, allowed the family to assist Mitchell during his whole life. Mitchell's first work, "Joe Gould 's Secret " (1964) predicted the last decades of his own life. From 1964 until his death in 1996, Mitchell went daily to his office, but never published again something so successful. In memory of Mitchell his colleague Roger Angell published in the New Yorker of 10 June 1996 as follows: "Every morning, he stepped out of the elevator into a deep thought, nodded silently, if you entgegenkamst him and locked himself in his office. At lunch time he appeared then on again, getting his brown felt hat on his head and his tan raincoat; one and a half hours later, he returned to the action and joined again behind his door. From the inside was not much typing to hear, and people which he had in his office, reported that his desk up on paper and pencils was completely empty. At the end of the day he went home. Sometimes, when he stood in the evening in the elevator, I heard him sigh softly, but he never complained and told never. "

He died at the age of 87 years at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in Manhattan on cancer. In 2008 the Library of America chose his story " Execution" for inclusion in its two- century retrospective of American True Crime.
