Joseph-Noël Sylvestre

Joseph -Noël Sylvestre (* June 24, 1847 in Béziers in the Hérault, † 1926) was a French history, genre and portrait painter. Other spellings of his name are Joseph Noël, Joseph -Noel and Joseph Noel.

Between 1869 and 1876, Sylvestre received awards for some of his historical paintings. From about the beginning of the 20th century was its history style but not more than up to date, and today Sylvestre is very little known.

Biography

Sylvestre began his artistic training in Toulouse, where he copied among others Thomas Couture's thirst for gold ( SOIF de l'or ). At the École des Beaux- Arts ( School of Fine Arts) in Paris, he became a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel, of which he was trained in the style of academic realism ( "art pompier ").

In 1869, he won third place in the Prix de Rome, a prestigious multi-year art scholarship including stay in Rome for his painting Soldier of Marathon ( Soldat de Marathon, now in the Musée d'Art et d' Histoire in Auxerre). 1875 and 1876 Sylvestre received the medal second or first class. In 1876, he was for the painting Locusta tests in Nero's presence, the prepared for poison Britannicus at the Salon de Paris awarded the Prix du Salon. The French State and buyers from all over Europe were interested in Sylvestres works.

His success prompted Sylvestre to a trip to Rome, where he wrote his monumental painting The last moments of Emperor Vitellius designed (1878 in the Salon de Paris presented ). In the following years Sylvestre created more large-scale works with historical, sometimes spectacularly bloodthirsty motifs, partly patriotic features bore (1888 The Gaul Ducar beheaded the Roman general Flaminius at the Battle of Lake Trasimeno, 1884 The murder Trencavel, 1893 François Rude at work on the Arc de Triomphe ). These paintings include also the sack of Rome by the barbarians in the year 410 (1890), in which case the Sylvestre civilization of ancient Rome with the memory of the history of his native region ( Gallia Narbonensis ) combined. Later Sylvestre moved from its historicizing Roman and Visigoth motifs to representations of musketeers and enjoyment of wine in the style of Ernest Meissonier and Ferdinand Roybets.
