Joseph Oesterlé

Joseph Oesterlé (born 1954 in Alsace ) is a French mathematician who deals with number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry.

Oesterlé studied from 1973 at the École Normale Supérieure and is a professor at the University of Paris VI (Pierre et Marie Curie ). He was director at the Institute Henri Poincaré in Paris.

Oesterlé formulated with David Masser 1985, the abc conjecture, one of the most important unsolved problems in number theory. He formulated in the series of studies on criteria for the modularity of elliptic curves.

His doctoral counts Loïc Merel.

He was a member of Bourbaki.
