Joseph Ryelandt

Joseph Victor Marie Ryelandt ( born April 7, 1870 in Bruges, † June 29, 1965 ) was a Belgian composer and director of the Conservatory in Bruges.

Life

Joseph Ryelandt received music lessons from an early age. He studied philosophy and law, but sat during which his musical activities continued. In 1891 he began to study music at Edgar Tinel.

From 1895 he devoted himself exclusively to composition until he director of the city of Bruges Conservatory in 1924. He was involved in the organization of the competition Concours Reine Elisabeth.

Ryelandt was commissioned a Te Deum to write for the Belgian independence anniversary. In 1937 he became a member of the Belgian Academy, 1938, he was Baron. In 1945, he went into retirement.

Works

Ryelandt bequeathed 133 works with opus number. His compositions have been described as a late romantic or impressionistic.

Ryelandts reputation during his lifetime was based on his five great oratorios:

  • Purgatory, Op 39 (1904 ), oratorio on Latin Psalms for soprano, choir and orchestra
  • De komst the Heren op 45 (1906 ), Christmas Oratorio in three parts for soloists, chorus and orchestra
  • Maria Op 48 (1909 ), oratorio for soloists, chorus and orchestra
  • Agnus Dei, Op 56 (1913 ), oratorio for soloists, chorus and orchestra on texts by Jean Delvigne and O. van Rie
  • Christ Rex, Op 79 (1922 ), oratorio for soloists, chorus and orchestra on texts by Charles Martens, commission for Pope Pius XI.

He also composed seven cantatas and a Te Deum, motets, the mystery play of Parabole La Vierge and the musical drama Sainte Cécile. He composed three Masses and a Requiem:

  • Missa Op 72 (1918 ) for mixed choir a cappella
  • Missa Op 84 (1925 ) for four-part choir and organ
  • Missa six vocibus Op 111 (1934) for six -part choir a cappella
  • Missa pro defunctis Op 127 (1939) for mixed choir a cappella

Ryelandt wrote six symphonies, but destroyed the first. He composed three overtures, a symphonic poem, Gethsemani, three orchestral preludes and an orchestral suite.

Ryelandt, himself a pianist, wrote many works for piano, including 12 sonatas. The piano also plays an essential role in his chamber music, seven violin sonatas, cello sonatas and three each for horn, oboe and clarinet. He composed two piano quintets and a piano trio.

He composed about 65 art songs in French and Flemish texts.
