Joseph Schildkraut

Joseph Schildkraut ( born March 22, 1896 in Vienna, Austria, † 21 January 1964 in New York City, New York, United States) was an Austrian - American film and theater actor of Austrian descent.

Life

Joseph Schildkraut, son of the well-known actor Rudolph Schildkraut was taught at a young age by Albert Bassermann. In 1910 he accompanied his father on his tour to the USA in 1913 and returned to Europe. In Berlin, Schildkraut was formed by Max Reinhardt and soon became known it. After films in Germany and Austria, where he worked, pulled Schildkraut 1920 in the United States. In 1921 he made his film debut in the United States. He also starred in 1923 in Peer Gynt and 1932 in Alice in Wonderland on Broadway on stage.

Joseph Schildkraut was a convincing character actor, in 1938 - was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor - as the second actor ever. He, Paul Muni ( who in 1937 received the Academy Award for Best Actor ), Maximilian Schell ( 1962) and Christoph Waltz ( 2010) are the only previous Austrians, who were awarded an acting Oscar.

Shortly after the filming of The Greatest Story Ever Told, he died at the age of 67 of a heart attack.

Private life

On April 7, 1923 married Schildkraut for the First Time. The marriage with the actress Elise Bartlett was divorced on June 9, 1930. With his second wife, Marie McKay, whom he married on May 27, 1932 Schildkraut was married 29 years. She died during filming on 17 February 1962. During summer 1963 married Schildkraut Leonora Rogers, with whom he remained married until his death. Each of the three marriages remained childless.

Joseph Schildkraut collected letters, documents and photographs of the family of Anne Frank. A number of documents belonging to the estate Otto Heinrich Frank, her father. The archive was auctioned on November 5, 2012 at the auction house Doyle in New York.
