Joseph Urban

Joseph Urban ( born May 26, 1872 in Vienna, † July 10, 1933 in New York City ) was a first Austrian, later American architect, illustrator and stage designer.

Life

Joseph Urban studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Karl von Hasenauer and in 1890 was a founding member of the Hagenbund. Together with his brother Heinrich Lefler, he illustrated some lovely picture books and elaborate Commemorative celebrating anniversaries the government of Emperor Franz Joseph. The multi- talented also created numerous outfits for the big theaters in Vienna. The most important buildings from his time in Vienna are the Rathaus Keller ( 1898), the torn in the 1960 Exhibition Hall of the Federal Hagen and the imperial tribune for the Huldigungsfestzug (1908 ). 1911 Urban emigrated to the USA in 1912 and artistic director of the Boston Opera House. Two years later he went to New York City, where he was responsible for the costumes, the sets and the Ziegfeld Follies poster advertising and later the Metropolitan Opera.

As in Vienna, many of its buildings have not survived the times in the USA, with the exception of the Mar -A -Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, the New School and the base of the Hearst Tower in New York City. Joseph Urban is considered a co-founder of the American Art Deco. To him, the color gel Urban Blue ( Roscolux # 81) was named after him in honor.
