Joseph von Gerlach

Joseph von Gerlach ( born April 3, 1820 in Mainz, † December 17, 1896 in Munich) was a German anatomist and professor at the Friedrich -Alexander- University of Erlangen. From 1865 to 1866 he was rector of the university.

Life and work

Gerlacht spent his childhood and youth in Aschaffenburg and studied from 1837 at the Universities of Würzburg, Munich and Berlin Medicine, where he became in 1841 a doctorate. After a stay in Vienna in 1842, he returned back to Berlin before 1844 graduated from the University of Giessen. He stayed in Paris, London and Dublin. In 1846 he settled in Mainz as a physician. In succession by Gottfried Fleischmann he joined in 1850 to the professorship of anatomy at the University of Erlangen. He headed the institute until 1891. Pending the appointment of Isidor Rosenthal 1872, he lectured in physiology. In 1896 he was retired.

Gerlach was one of the founders of the histological staining technique and the anatomical microphotography. He first showed that in humans takes place skin breathing. One he described mucosal fold between the cecum ( cecum ) and appendix ( vermiform appendix ) is called Gerlach flap.

1850 Gerlach was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

He was married from 1847 to Therese Moritz. His son Leo was also an anatomist and succeeded his father in Erlangen., His daughter Agnes was the wife of Emil Fischer.
