Joshua Hassan

Sir Joshua Abraham Hassan, GBE, KCMG, LVO, QC ( born August 21, 1915 Gibraltar; † July 1, 1997 ibid ), nicknamed Salvador, a gibraltischer politician. He was the first mayor (1955-1969, actually since 1945) and the first Chief Minister of Gibraltar.

In the course of five periods of office (1964-1969 and 1972-1987) he held for 20 years, the Office of the Chief Minister. He was a committed civil rights activist, advisor to the British Queen and primarily responsible for the emergence of an independent administrative structures.

He came from an old Sephardic family who originally lived in Morocco and in Menorca.

Joshua Hassan was married twice. From the marriage four daughters were born.

His nephew, Solomon Levy, was mayor of Gibraltar von 2008 to 2009.
