Josiah Child

Sir Josiah Child (* 1630 in London, † June 22, 1699 ) was an English merchant, economist and mercantilist.

By cleverly calculated purchases of ordinary shares of the British East India Company, he came in a short time to wealth, became a member of the committee of the East India Company and brought the main bodies of the Company in London as well as in the Indian operations in the possession of his relatives and favorites.

Initially belonging to the Whig Party, Child came later, after he became a baronet in 1678, over as Governor of the East India Company to the Tories. Child knew to assert themselves by wise generosity in the favor of the British Royal Family and all had that influence, to win for themselves. Even Charles II and James II came to bid on gifts.

Only after the expulsion of James II and the accession of William III. Child had against whom now a violent agitation rose, make another governor space.
