Josie MacAvin

Josie MacAvin (* 1919 in Ireland; † January 26, 2005 in Monkstown, Ireland) was an Irish art director and production designer, who also won an Emmy next to an Academy Award for Best Production Design.

Life

Josie MacAvn began her career as art director and production designer in the film industry in 1959 with the film Shake Hands with the Devil and worked until 2002 at the scenic amenities of around sixty films.

In 1964 she was awarded with Ralph W. Brinton, Ted Marshall and Joselyn Herbert her first Oscar nomination for Best Production Design in the color film Tom Jones - Between the bed and the gallows (1963 ) by Tony Richardson with Albert Finney, Susannah York, Hugh Griffith. Another nomination for this Academy she was with Marshall, Hal Pereira and Tambi Larsen 1966 for the black and white film The Spy Who Came in from the Cold ( 1965) by Martin Ritt with Richard Burton, Claire Bloom and Oskar Werner.

At the Academy Awards in 1986, she received jointly with Stephen B. Grimes Oscar for Best Production Design in Out of Africa (1985 ) Sydney Pollack with Meryl Streep, Robert Redford and Klaus Maria Brandauer.

In 1995, she won with Rodger Maus, Brian Ackland -Snow and Joseph Litsch also an Emmy for outstanding art direction in the first part of the CBS television series produced by Scarlett (1994 ) with Joanne Whalley, Timothy Dalton and Stephen Collins.

As a representative of the profession of Artdirectoren Josie MacAvin was additionally appointed as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
