Josip Manolić

Josip Manolić ( born March 22, 1920 in Kalinovac in Bjelovar ) was a high official of the Communist Party of Croatia and from 24 August 1990 to July 17, 1991 Prime Minister of Croatia.

Manolić graduated in Zagreb from a law degree. From 1939 he was a member of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia and has held responsible positions in the party and trade union before the Second World War. From 1941 he was with the partisans.

After the Second World War, he held different positions in the party and in associations. 1959-1960 he was head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Croatia 1960-1965 and Chief of Police in Zagreb.

In 1965 he was elected as a deputy in the Croatian Sabor Republiksrat, where he was president of the Legislative Risch- legal commission among others.

In the wake of the Croatian Spring, he lost his seat.

In June 1989 he founded together with Franjo Tuđman and Stipe Mesic, the Croatian Democratic Union ( HDZ) and built their party apparatus on.

In the summer of 1990 he dissolved Stipe Mesic from the Office of the Prime Minister of Croatia.

At the party congress in October 1993, he strengthened himself, along with Mesic for a change in the Bosnia policy Tuđman. For this he was, at that time, ruled chairman of the Senate from the HDZ. He and Mesic, then president of the lower house, founded in 1994, a new party, the Croatian Independent Democrats ( HDN).
