Josip Uhač

Josip Uhač ( born June 20, 1924 in Brseč, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes; † 18 January 1998 ) was an archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church and the Vatican diplomat.

Life

Josip Uhač received his theological and philosophical education in Fiume, Venice, Gorizia and Rome. He received his doctorate in both Catholic theology and in canon law and completed a special training in preparation for the diplomatic service. On April 16, 1949, he received the Sacrament of Holy Orders. He then worked as a pastor in various churches of Rome and continued his university studies. Between 1954 and 1970 he worked as a secretary and advisor to the Apostolic Nunciature in Panama, Egypt, Germany and Spain.

Pope Paul VI. appointed Titular Archbishop Josip Uhač 1970 Tharros and appointed him as Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Pakistan. He received his episcopal consecration of the Croatian Archbishop of Rijeka, Viktor Burić, on 5 September 1970.

In 1976, Josip Uhač Pro- Nuncio to Cameroon and Apostolic Delegate in Equatorial Guinea, 1981 Pro-Nuncio in Zaire. 1984 Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in the Federal Republic of Germany, 1991 to the Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. From 1991 to 1995 he headed the Pontifical Commission for Mission issues. Josip Uhač should be included in the solemn consistory on 21 February 1998 in the College of Cardinals, but died a few hours before the proclamation by Pope John Paul II on January 18, 1998 in Rome. He was buried in his birthplace Brseč (Istria ).
