An iron collar is an arc-shaped shackle that was created in earlier times prisoners. It consists of two semi-circular (generally strip-shaped ) steel parts, which are connected at one side with a hinge. On the other side there is a locking mechanism that can be opened from the bound to the iron collar person not without help. Neck were iron, especially in the Middle Ages and the early modern period used in connection with slavery even later. Under Napoleon the application of the neck iron (le carcan ), stigmatization and mayhem were regulated by law in the " penal code " of the year 1810. The application of a neck iron is considered inhumane kind of bondage, which is no longer officially used today.
