An iron collar is an arc-shaped shackle that was created in earlier times prisoners. It consists of two semi-circular (generally strip-shaped ) steel parts, which are connected at one side with a hinge. On the other side there is a locking mechanism that can be opened from the bound to the iron collar person not without help. • The chain is connected to other chains that have been applied to the tied person, for example with handcuffs.
• The chain is connected to an immovable object such as a wall in a dungeon or by standing on the marketplace pillory. The bound person is thus chained and prevented from escaping.
• The chain is connected with another person who performs the bound person.

To create the neck iron the closure mechanism is opened, set the iron collar around the neck of the person to be captivating, folded and sealed. The iron collar is so tight that it can not be pulled over the head, but so far, that still can be breathed and swallowed.

Neck were iron, especially in the Middle Ages and the early modern period used in connection with slavery even later. Under Napoleon the application of the neck iron (le carcan ), stigmatization and mayhem were regulated by law in the " penal code " of the year 1810. The application of a neck iron is considered inhumane kind of bondage, which is no longer officially used today.
