Józef Dwernicki

Józef Dwernicki (* March 14, 1779 in Warsaw, † December 1857 in Lopatyn on the estate of Count Zamoyski ) was a Polish general.

Dwernicki joined the Polish Legion in 1809 and took the campaign Poniatowski in Eastern Galicia in part and moved 1812 to Russia. After the retreat, he was promoted to colonel in 1814. After the peace, he entered the service of Russia, and in 1826 brigadier general.

After the outbreak of the Revolution of 1830 it the organization of the Polish cavalry was transferred. He fought on February 14, 1831 at Stoczek the first victory over the Russians. He was then sent to Volhynia and took up a strong position at Boremel against the Rüdigersche Corps. On April 19, he won a number of advantages, but then had to give way to the Russian superiority, however, brought about its passage over the Styx. He was eventually trapped by General Rüdiger at Mokalowka and stepped over to Galicia on April 27, 1831. His corps had to pull pow to Hungary.

Since 1832, Dwernicki lived for a time in France and London. In 1848 he returned to Galicia, where he died in December 1857 in Lopatyn on the estate of Count Zamoyski.
