Józef Lipień

Józef Lipień ( born February 6, 1949 in Jaczkow, Lower Silesian Voivodeship ) is a former Polish wrestler. He was world champion in 1973 in Tehran and won at the Olympic Games in 1980, a silver medal each in the Greco-Roman Bantamweight.

Career

Józef Lipień started in 1963 together with his twin brother Kazimierz Lipień in sports club MKS Jelena Gora with the rings. His first coach was there Janusz Jasczuk. He concentrated entirely on the Greco- Roman style. After initial successes at junior level and due to their obvious talent, both brothers were in 1967 delegated to the top Polish club Wisloki Dębica where a wrestler center was. There Tadeusz Popiolek and Czeslaw Korzen were their coach. Later, in the Polish national team wrestler, in the two wrestlers were taken in 1968 still came Janusz Tracewski added as a coach. 1969 Józef Lipień was Polish champion bantamweight for the first time. But he was used this year with no international championships. From 1970, but he was there again, but was able to achieve a top position neither at the European Championships this year in Berlin (East), yet at the World Championships in Edmonton. Also at the World Championships in 1971 in Sofia he only reached the 17th place. Slight progress was seen in 1972. He arrived at the European Championships in Katowice bantamweight on the 8th Place and defeated it the first time his nemesis Risto Björlin. Also at the Olympic Games in Munich, he came to 8th place, where he was beaten from the Soviet Union after two victorious struggles of Christo Traikow from Bulgaria and Rustem Kazakov.

The big break into the world top succeeded Józef Lipień then in 1973. At the European Championships this year in Helsinki, he won two fights before he was defeated by Pertti Ukkola from Finland and Ivan Frgić from Yugoslavia and came to 6th place. At the World Championships in 1973 in Tehran, he then defeated, among others, Christo Traikow and Rustem Kazakov and wrestled draw against Ivan Frgić and although he had recorded a first round defeat against Sweden Per Lindholm, he was in Tehran world champion bantamweight because Lindholm did not reach the finals.

At the World Cup in 1974 in Katowice him the title defense would almost succeeded. He remained there unbeaten in six fights, defeating, among others Per Lindholm, the strong Stefan Krasimir from Bulgaria, the silver medalist from the 1972 Olympics draw Hans -Jürgen Veil from Schiffer city and Ivan Frgić and wrestled in his last fight against Farchat Mustafin from the USSR. World Champion then was Mustafin because he made ​​the preliminaries had a missing dot less than Józef Lipień, the vice - world champion.

Vice World Champion was Józef Lipień also at the World Championships 1975 in Minsk. He won there over Bernd Drechsel from the GDR, Ivan Frgić, Hans -Jürgen Veil, Per Lindholm and Pertti Ukkola before this time he was defeated by Farchat Mustafin on points.

No medal win succeeded Józef Lipień even when taking part in his third Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976. He won there though again against Pertti Ukkola, but succumbed to the Romanians Mihai Boţilă and again Farchat Mustafin and landed on the disappointing 10th place for him.

1977 Józef Lipień paused, started in 1978 but again at the European Championships in Oslo, where he won a bronze medal in the bantamweight title with five victories and defeats against Mihai Boţilă and Vladimir Pogudin from the Soviet Union. No medal win, however, succeeded him at the World Championships this year in Mexico City, even though he, among other things there won against Mihai Boţilă and the Bulgarians Asen Milew because he was defeated by Ivan Frgić and Shamil Serikow from the USSR. He landed in Mexico City on the 6th Place.

1979 took Józef Lipień at the Sports University in Warsaw on sports studies with the aim Ringer coach. In 1980, he was then to qualify again for participating in the Olympic Games in Moscow. To be able to start there bantamweight, he had to work off a total of 11.5 kg. A drastic treatment, which he did successfully survived, because in Moscow, he was in top form, defeating, among others Josef Krysta from Czechoslovakia and Benni Ljungbeck from Sweden and reached the final battle against Shamil Serikow in which he indeed just going down on points, but the silver medal still won an Olympic medal.

After the successful completion of the AWF Warszawa Józef Lipień worked for several years as a wrestler coach in Denmark ( Frederikshavn ) and Sweden ( Hörby ) and after his return to Poland in Wisloki Debica.
