Jacobsen himself wrote in Danish and was later translated into his native language Faroese. His most famous work is the novel Barbara, came out in 1939 and had the old Faroese tradition of the pastor's wife Beinta Broberg its basis.

Life and work

Jørgen - Frantz Jacobsen was cand mag. in History and French at the University of Copenhagen. He was particularly preoccupied with Nordic history and wrote as a journalist, a number of feature articles and articles, and two books on the political relations of the Faroe Islands to the north and Denmark.

Even as a 21 year old, he was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis, and long periods of his short life, he had to bring in tuberculosis sanatoriums. Jørgen - Frantz Jacobsen had beautiful literary ambitions, and in 1934 he began his life's work - the historical novel Barbara. The novel, which was written in Danish, and was published a year after his death, had translated from the outset success and was translated into many languages . Jørgen - Frantz Jacobsen was an avid letter writer and had a steady correspondence with his peers and family friend, the poet William Heinesen (1900-1991), who was also a well-known letter writer. William Heinesen gave in 1958 a selection of letters from Jørgen - Frantz in the book Det dyrebare liv ( The precious life ) out. In one of the letters it says:

In his letters he mentioned probably hopeless love affair with a woman he "Barbara" called (in reality his cousin Estrid Bannister Good), and his plans to write a novel, the external action on legends and lore from the years 1700 through the young pastor's wife Beinta Broberg, all charmed with her beauty and grace. This historic daughter of Løgting Secretary ( sorinskrivari ) Peder Sørensen Broberg was responsible, according to tradition, the early death of her first two husbands and led the third, finally, in great misfortune. But the historical inspiration applied only to the outer frame - Jørgen - Frantz Jacobsen composite, unfathomable and very human Barbara, has only little to do with the evil seductress of legend ( Illa Beinta - the evil Beinta ) together. About Barbara, he writes:

The novel was filmed in 1961 by UFA but the fabric designed quite freely. For example, Barbara was there the wife of a doctor, not a priest. A second film adaptation of the film by Nils Malmros Barbara 1997.
