Juan de Juni

Juan de Juni or Jean de Joigny (* 1506 in Joigny, Yonne department today, † 1577 in Valladolid ) was a Franco- Spanish sculptor and woodcarver. His works are characterized by high expressivity and emotionality of the representation.

Life

The artist received his education in France and Italy. Thereafter, he was appointed the Bishop of Porto, to build the local bishop's palace. To 1533 he moved his activities to Spain, where he worked on the design of the facade of the Hostal de San Marcos in León. In 1540 he was commissioned by the Bishop of Mondoñedo, in the creation of the tomb in the Convento de San Francisco ( Valladolid) participate.

Further work in Valladolid, Salamanca, León testify to the reputation of the artist among his contemporaries. Beginning in 1577 transferred Juan de Juni reasons failing health his Güterverwaltung his son Isaac de Juni. He died between 9 and 17 April 1577.

Works (selection)

  • A sorrowful Mary, polychrome, 1570 in the same church of Valladolid, which is still carried through the town in procession on the occasion of Semana Santa.
  • A Christ on the Cross, also polychromatic, in the Convent of Santa Catalina de Valladolid.
  • The Museo Nacional de Escultura in Valladolid is now home to an Anthony of Padua and at the museum associated Capilla de la Piedad, an Entombment of Christ, which was once part of a now-vanished altar. This burial is of special quality. The realism of the representation, the choppiness of the gesture and the drapery and the rich colors of the version characterize this work as an important creation of the early Baroque.
