Juan de Mendoza, 3rd Marquis of Montesclaros

Juan Manuel de Mendoza y Luna, 3rd Marquis of Monte Claros (* January 1571 in Guadalajara, Castile, Spain, † October 9, 1628 in Madrid, Spain) was a Spanish officer, who from 1603 to 1607 as viceroy of New Spain and 1607 to 1615 served as Viceroy of Peru.

Origin and Youth

Juan de Mendoza was born into a wealthy Spanish noble family. His father died when he was young; the mother took over his education. He entered the service of the Spanish Crown and participated in the expedition of the Duke of Alba in Portugal part. In 1591 he was inducted into the Order of Santiago and served as governor of Seville.

Viceroy of New Spain

In May 1603 Mendoza was appointed viceroy of New Spain. He sailed to the New World, where he met the end of October 1603, a.
