Juan Ignacio Cirac Sasturain cited Ignacio Cirac, ( born October 11, 1965 in Manresa / Spain) is a physicist and Director of the Theory Division at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics ( MPQ ) in Garching.

Cirac studied theoretical physics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and obtained his doctorate in 1991, then became Profesor Titular to teach at the University of Castilla -La Mancha ( 1991-96 ). From 1996-2001 he was a professor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Innsbruck, where he worked in the field of quantum computer science, among others, Peter Zoller. In December 2001, Cirac was appointed Director and Scientific Member of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics. He is also a member of the Nanosystems Initiative Munich ( NIM) since 2007.

His work focuses on the fields of quantum information theory, the theory of degenerate quantum gases and strongly correlated systems as well as the theoretical quantum optics. His most cited work (as of 2011) is made together with Peter Zoller proposal of the ion trap quantum computer.

Awards

Cirac was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Castilla -La Mancha and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. In 2006 he received the Spanish Prince of Asturias Prize for Scientific and Technical Research. Among other things, he was counted in the Forbes magazine among the ten people who could change the world. In 2009, he received the Carl Zeiss Research Award, as well as with Peter Zoller, the Spanish BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award from the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, one of the most highly endowed research prizes. In 2010 he received together with Peter Zoller and David Wineland the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Physics. In 2013 he received the Medal of Honor of the Niels Bohr Institute.
