Juan Lindo

Life

Lindo comes from a Latifundistenfamilie. He belonged to the Partido Conservador. In 1814 he became a lawyer ( Licenciado en Derecho ) at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. After graduation, he worked for the Spanish colonial administration. After the independence of Central America from Spain in 1821 he was Governor of the Province of Comayagua. Juan Lindo suggested the annexation of Central American provinces by the Mexican Empire under Agustín de Iturbide.

In 1826 he was elected deputy to the Parliament of Honduras. In 1827 he supported José Justo Milla Pineda in the uprising and coup against José Dionisio de la Trinidad de Herrera y Díaz del Valle. He was a deputy in the Constituent Assembly, which was elected in June 1838 and represented there, the Partido Conservador. As a parliamentarian, he supported the separation of Honduras by the Federación Centroamericana in October 1838.

Presidency in El Salvador
