Juca

Júlio Cernadas Pereira, known as Juca ( born January 13, 1929 in Maputo, Mozambique, † October 11, 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal ) was a former Portuguese international footballer and coach. As a player he won in the 1950's five league championships and once the Cup of Portugal. As a coach, he won with the same club in the early 1960s two more championships and another trophy. In addition to other trainer positions at various Portuguese clubs he was in the 1970s and 1980s also three times coach of the national team.

Career

Association

Pereira was born as the son of Portuguese parents, in Maputo. He began his professional career at the regional club CD Maxaquene as a goalkeeper. In 1949 he returned to the land of his ancestors and was committed by the Portuguese first division side Sporting Lisbon. Played there nine years, until he had to end his career due to a knee injury at the age of 29 years. At the time he won the championship five times and in 1954 even the Double.

National

His debut for the Portuguese national football team, he announced on November 23, 1952 in a friendly against Austria, which ended 1-1. His last game he played against Hungary on June 9, 1956, which ended also 1:1.

In his four-year National team career, he completed a total of six games.

Coaching career

1960 Pereira began his career as coach of the U19 team of Sporting Lisbon. Already in the following year he was head coach of the first team and won her the championship in 1962 and 1966 and the national cup in 1963.

After he was coach at Vitória Guimarães, Académica de Coimbra and FC Barreirense in the following years, he returned in the 1975/76 season for Sporting Lisbon back. However, he was fired again at the end of the season because he could not reach the fifth place with the team and thus failed to qualify for the international competition.

In 1977 he was appointed coach of the Portuguese national team and graduated with her five matches in qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 1978, three of which were won. However, it was only achieved the second place and thus failed to qualify.

In 1980 he was re-appointed coach. In qualifying for the World Cup 1982, he only reached fourth place and missed again the final rounds.

Pereira was appointed in 1987 one more time to coach, but could not at the third attempt in the qualification for the FIFA World Cup 1990 qualifying and reached only number three. As a result, he was dismissed in connection.

By 2004, he was sports director at Sporting Lisbon and died in 2007 at the age of 78 years.
