As Catalànic, also Qatalanit ( קאטאלנית ) or technical language Judeo - Catalan, refers to a Jewish language that was spoken by Jewish communities in the northeast of present-day Spain, especially in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. From a linguistic point of view it had a lot in common with the early Shuadit ( Judeo - Provençal). From a historical, ethnic and political point of view, the Catalan community was long separated from the Shuadit community. This is mainly due to the Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. The Judeo - Catalan flourished between the 12th century and 1492, when the Jews were expelled from Spain (see Alhambra Decree ).
