Jules Germain Cloquet

Jules Germain Cloquet ( born December 18, 1790 in Paris, † February 23, 1883 ) was a French surgeon and anatomist. He worked from 1824 as a professor of surgery in his hometown and published among other works 1821-1831 one consisting of five volumes anatomy atlas. Among the discovered by him and named after him anatomical structures include the Cloquet canal and the Cloquet lymph nodes; in surgery is referred to as Cloquet hernia a particular form of a femoral.

Life

Jules Cloquet was born in 1790 in Paris and was the younger brother of Hippolyte Cloquet, who was also working as a doctor in Paris. He first began studying science at the Collège de Médecine in Rouen, but returned in 1810 to his hometown to study medicine. From 1815 he worked as a prosector in anatomy, two years later he obtained the doctorate. He worked from 1819 in Paris as a surgeon at the Hôpital St. Louis, and in 1824 professor of surgery, and in 1831 appointed for surgical pathology and 1834 in addition to clinical surgery. From 1852 he worked for Napoleon III. as a consulting surgeon. He died in 1883 in his hometown.

Work

Jules Cloquet focused particularly on the study and treatment of hernias and published a large number of treatises on surgery and anatomy, including 1821-1831 under the title " Anatomy de l' homme " a five-volume anatomy atlas with 1,300 illustrations, of which he most self- recorded. He was also the first to describe the named after him Cloquet canal in the eye and the Cloquet lymph node and also the inventor of several surgical instruments, such as a hemostat and a device for removing foreign bodies.

Awards

Jules Cloquet counted in 1821 to the first members of the newly founded Académie nationale de Médecine, which he chaired in 1860 as president. From 1855 he was also a member of the Académie des sciences. He was appointed in 1867 and incorporated in 1847 as Baron knight in the Legion of Honor in 1856 and was promoted to officer.
