Julián del Casal

Julián del Casal ( born November 7, 1863 in Havana, † October 21, 1893 ibid ) was a Cuban writer.

Casal occurred mainly as a poet in appearance. His main work consists of musical and melancholy poems. He was one of the most important Cuban representative of the literary movement of Modernism. This Modernista, next Casal mainly Rubén Darío was influenced by the French modernism.

Life

Casal, the son of a Spaniard and a Cuban, already lost 5 years with his mother, who, unlike his father, he had an intimate relationship. Many observers saw it as the most defining moment Casals, which also influenced his work. He attended in Belén to 1879, the Real Colegio. He then attended the University of Havana and entered a job at the local authorities. In parallel, he worked as a journalist for La Habana Elegante. Because of a report critical of the government, however, he had to give up this job.

To further sanctions to escape, he went to Spain, but returned for financial reasons soon returned to Cuba. Casal devoted himself to his literary work and joined with colleagues such as Gustave Moreau and Rubén Darío in conjunction. His first works he published after the death of his father in 1885. His first publications in Cuban newspapers appeared partly under the pseudonym Hernani.
