Julian Siegel

Julian Siegel ( born May 13, 1966 in Nottingham ) is a British jazz musician (saxophone, clarinet, composition ).

Life and work

Siegel, whose father was a singer who was active in Poland and after the Second World War to support troops in the Middle East, played at school in different ensembles. Influenced by his father's record collection, he developed his interest in the form of improvisation. He studied classical saxophone to 1987 and conducting at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, where he stayed for the next few years. Since 1991, in London, he played with colleagues such as Julian Argüelles, Django Bates, Joey Calderazzo, Kirk Lightsey, Liam Noble or Kate Williams and was a member of the big band of Stan Sulzmann.

With the band Partisans, which he led with guitarist Phil Robson, he scored a breakthrough; with this group, which also included bassist Thad Kelly and drummer Gene Calderazzo, he toured Europe and had successful performances at numerous festivals. In the next few years he performed with Delightful Precipe of Django Bates, the Mask Orchestra by Colin Towns and the big band Jazz Jamaica. Since 2004, he led a band under his own name. He also played with the singers Norma Winstone, Cleo Laine and Jacqui Dankworth and with Greg Cohen and Joey Baron. In the field of jazz, he was involved 1991-2012 to 31 recording sessions.

Prizes and awards

Seal was established in 2007 with a BBC Jazz Award for Best Instrumentalist ausgezeichnet.2011 he also won the London Award for Art and Performance for jazz.
