Júlio Prestes

Júlio Prestes de Albuquerque ( born March 15, 1882 in Itapetininga, † February 9, 1946 in São Paulo) was a Brazilian politician.

From 1926 he was governor of the state of São Paulo. On 1 March 1930 he was elected president of Brazil. Júlio Prestes but could never remain in office since the revolution of October 1930 Washington Luís Pereira his predecessor de Sousa deposed in a coup and gave the state power on November 3, 1930 Getúlio Vargas Dornelles. With him ends the República Velha, which had existed since the fall of the monarchy in 1889. Until 1934 he lived in exile. After his return he devoted himself to his estate. Only after the fall of Getúlio Vargas in 1945 and political liberalization, he returned to politics and was co-founder of the União Democrática Nacional ( UDN). A year later he died.
