Julius Fürst

Julius Fürst ( born May 12, 1805 in Tserkov in Poznan, † February 9, 1873 in Leipzig ) was a German orientalist.

Life

Prince studied in Berlin ( in Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel), Breslau and Halle (with Wilhelm Gesenius ). He was a renowned scholar of Semitic languages ​​and a representative of the Haskalah. His research field mainly involved the Semitic linguistics and literature and history of the Middle East. For Leopold Zunz ' edition of the Bible, he translated the books of Daniel and Ezra 1838. 1840 to 1851 he edited the Judeo -Enlightenment weekly Der Orient.

Among his friends was one in 1834, the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, with whom he corresponded well. In 1848, Prince held up in Berlin and welcomed the local March Revolution. Under the impact of the events to be German freedom song, which was set to music by Robert Schumann was born.
