Julius Goltermann

Julius Goltermann ( born July 15, 1823 in Hamburg, † April 4, 1876 in Stuttgart ) was a German cellist and composer.

Life

Goltermann, born as the son of musician Johann David Henry Goltermann, formed with Prell (father and son) and the brothers Lee, the so-called Hamburg school of cello playing. He was a student of Friedrich August Kummer and had held the position of principal cellist of the Hamburg City Theatre, but was also sought after soloist. From 1850 he was professor at the Prague Conservatory, from his cello class went among others Julius Cabisius and David Popper forth. Subsequently, he was appointed as principal cellist of the court orchestra in Stuttgart, where he in 1870 but retired.

Work

Goltermann always stood in the shadow of its namesake Georg Goltermann, with whom he is often in the literature, confused. In print only a few works have survived, such as the Souvenirs de Bellini.
