Julius von Schlosser

Julius Alwin Franz Georg Andreas Ritter von Schlosser ( born September 23, 1866 in Vienna, † December 1, 1938 ) was an Austrian art historian. Schlosser also wrote under the pseudonyms O. Hammer and Magnino.

Life

His parents were William Valentine of locksmith (* May 24, 1820, † March 9, 1870 ) and Sophie Maria Eiberger (* September 8, 1830; † September 28, 1916 )

His dissertation was in 1889 in Vienna on the topic " The Ordo Farfensis and the monastery of the early Middle Ages in the West ."

Schlosser was an important representative of the Vienna School of Art History. In 1901 he became director of the collection of sculptures and crafts of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. For a professor, he was appointed in 1905 and 1922 as a successor of Max Dvořák professor at the Institute II. In 1909 he became a corresponding member of the Austrian and 1914 Academy of Sciences. The Bavarian Academy of Sciences appointed him in 1929 to its corresponding member.

Schlosser has been dealing with the source of customer, the history of art and literature made ​​outstanding also in specialized topics such as the wax portrait or Wunderkammer, the museum of the early modern period.

He is buried in an honorary grave dedicated to the Vienna Central Cemetery ( 30D -1 -5). In 1941, in Vienna Floridsdorf ( 21st district ) was named the Schlossergasse after him.
