Juliusz Zarębski

Juliusz Zarębski ( born February 28, 1854 in Zhytomyr, † November 15, 1885 in Zhytomyr ) was a Polish composer and pianist.

Life

Zarębski received his first piano lessons from his mother, then from other teachers in Zhytomyr. 1870 to 1872 he studied at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna with Josef Dachs (piano ) and Franz Krenn (composition). The following year, he put in just three months in St. Petersburg the diploma examination. In 1874 he became a pupil of Franz Liszt, first in Rome and then followed him to Weimar. In 1879 he married the German pianist Johanna Wenzel ( later Polish Janina Zarebska, † 1928), also a Liszt pupil. In 1880 he became a professor at the Conservatory of Brussels. In 1885 he died in his hometown of tuberculosis.

As a pianist concerted Zarębski, also with his wife, in many European countries. In 1878 he joined at the Paris World Exhibition in with a model developed by the brothers Mangeot two-manual piano.

Work

Zarebski due to his early death relatively narrow catalog of works includes not only piano works, some song settings, and chamber music. In the tradition of Chopin and Liszt's standing, he developed a forward -looking at the Impressionist harmonies. After decades of oblivion today seems at least his last composition, the Piano Quintet dedicated to Franz Liszt G minor, Op 34 (1885), occasionally again in concert programs.
