Jumba la Mtwana

Jumba la Mtwana is a ruined city in Kilifi District, 15 km north of Mombasa in Kenya. On the grounds of the ruined city there are four houses, four mosques and a tomb. The archaeologist James Kirkman found the ruined city in 1972 during an excavation. In the ruins is a Swahili settlement dating from the 14th century that has been abandoned for unknown reasons back in the 15th century. Relatively well preserved, the " house of many doors ", which probably served as a hostel because it had many separate rooms, each with private laundry. The Great Mosque by the sea had its own prayer room for women and a tank for ritual ablutions.

In 1982, the city of ruins national monument was appointed.
