Juniperus recurva

Juniperus recurva is a plant belonging to the family of the cypress family ( Cupressaceae ). It is native to central Asia.

Description

Juniperus recurva grows as evergreen shrub or tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 10 meters. The branches branch off straight or slightly bent downward from the base and form a broadly conical or pyramidal shaped crown. The curved branches go from hanging from the branches. The light gray -brown to brown bark peels off in thin strips.

The needle-like, disposed in Dreierwirteln almost straight sheets are 3-10 mm in length and about 1 mm wide. You are on the upper leaf surface greenish white or light colored blue-green and have two white Stomatabänder. The base is decurrent and the tip is pointed.

Juniperus recurva is monoecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ), rarely there are also dioecious ( dioecious ) trees. The yellow male cones are oblong - ovate to elliptic - ovate shaped. They contain three which bear pollen sacs ten to 16 decussate arranged Mikrosporophylle. Female pins are oval shaped with a length of 0.6 to 1.2 centimeters and a thickness of 0.5 to 0.9 centimeters. Initially, they are colored blue-green, to maturity in the second year out they turn dark purple- brown. Each pin carries a, a length from 5 to 9 mm and a width of 3 to 6 millimeters ovoid to conically - shaped oval seed.

Occurrence

The natural range of Juniperus recurva includes Afghanistan, Pakistan, the north and north- east of India, Kashmir, Nepal, Bhutan, south-western China and northern Myanmar. In India you will find Juniperus recurva in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Kumaun. In China, it is in the south of the Autonomous Region of Tibet, in Sichuan and northwestern Yunnan.

In China Juniperus recurva thrives at altitudes 1800-3900 meters mainly in forests and thickets.

Use

The wood of Juniperus recurva used. Furthermore, the type is also used as ornamental plant use.

The species Juniperus recurva is divided into up to two varieties:

  • Juniperus recurva var coxii ( ABJacks. ) Melville usually grows as a shrub, rarely a tree. The variety is considered coxii by some authors as an independent Juniperus.
  • Juniperus recurva var recurva is the nominate form and usually grows as a tree, rarely a shrub.

Endangering

Juniperus recurva is classified as " not at risk " in the IUCN Red List. The variety coxii is classified as "endangered". It is used in two entries noted, however, that a re-examination of risk is necessary.
