Jurassic separatism

Under the Jura question (or the Jura conflict ) is an argument in Switzerland understood that had the creation of the canton of Jura in 1978 result. But also in the subsequent period and the subject remained to date. In order to develop further solutions, the Inter -Jura Assembly was founded in 1994.

The movement came from French-speaking separatists of the Jura, which belonged to the canton of Bern. The population in the north of the Canton of Bern is marked as a result of long historical affiliation with the Prince-Bishopric of Basel mostly Roman Catholic and felt discriminated against in linguistic as well as religious. Not only the Bernese government was against separation of the North from Südjura, as the Protestant French-speaking and German -speaking minority in the north- law was against it, and found the Canton of Bern represent their views better. It was not until 40 years after the start of this separation movement, on 24 September 1978, the Swiss people said at a referendum "yes" to the creation of the canton of Jura, which was thus without changing the outer limits of 23 canton of Switzerland. Some actions, especially by the youth group projurassischen " Béliers " had clearly terrorist aspects.

The canton of Jura emerged from the office districts Delsberg, Ajoie and free Mountains. Many Jura and the Jura government demand today that the rest of French-speaking municipalities of the canton of Bern connect to the canton of Jura. These districts, so Courtelary, Moutier and La Neuveville, which now make up the Administrative District Bernese Jura, always spoke out against a change. A problem with a merger of the Bernese Jura and the Canton of Jura is in the status of the bilingual city of Biel, which the only area with a French-speaking minority would thereby (40 percent of the population ) of the Canton of Bern and lose the merger the reference to the French-speaking hinterland would.

To date the last time was on November 24, 2013 in the Bernese Jura and voted in the Canton of Jura on a merger to form a new canton. The original was clearly accepted in the canton of Jura, in the Bernese Jura but equally clearly rejected. In the years to vote on a possible change of canton in the individual communities are provided.
