Jürgen Untermann

Under Jürgen Mann ( born October 24, 1928 in Rheinfelden (Baden ); † February 7, 2013 in Brauweiler ) was a German linguist, philologist and epigraphists.

Scientific activity

Under man studied with Hans Krahe and Ulrich Schmoll in Frankfurt and Tübingen. He habilitated in 1959. 1962 he conducted research at universities in Spain to the Monumenta Linguarum Hispanicarum, even with Antonio Tovar. From 1965 he was Professor of Historical Linguistics at the University of Cologne. His main field of research were the only fragmentary Italian and Old Spanish "debris languages ​​". Especially in the area of the Iberian language was under man as the highest scientific authority. Of particular importance its edition paleohispanischer inscriptions ( Monumenta Linguarum Hispanicarum, founded by Emil Hübner ) and the systematization he created the Iberian onomastics. Under man was a regular member of the German Archaeological Institute.
