Jurij Dalmatin

Yuri Dalmatians, also: Georg Dalmatians (* um 1547 in Gurkfeld in Carniola, † August 31 1589 in Ljubljana ) was a Protestant translator of the Bible into Slovene.

Life

Yuri Dalmatians, which seems to originate from a Dalmatian family, received up to the age of 18 with Adam Bohorič lessons. From 1565 to 1566 he attended the convent school to Bebenhausen at Tübingen and studied from 1566 to 1572 Protestant theology at the University of Tübingen. Trubar let him translate the 1572 Genesis into Slovenian. At the invitation of the estates of Carniola Dalmatians came in 1572 in Ljubljana from his position as a Protestant preacher in Slovenian ( Windischer ) and German language. He wrote several religious books.

Shortly after Trubar had already translated the New Testament from the German text by Martin Luther into Slovenian, Dalmatian realized the first translation of the entire Scriptures from Hebrew or Greek into his native language. He took the German version of Martin Luther 's aid.

For the translation of the Bible, he should have stayed on Auersperg Castle in Lower Carniola under the protection of Herbard VIII von Auersperg. To find a printing company, he went in October 1580 to Graz and Klagenfurt. The Bible translation came out in 1584 in Wittenberg. In the following years, 870 of his Slovenian Bibles were hidden in barrels made ​​by Carniola, Styria after 330 and 300 to Carinthia.
