JurÅjin
Jurojin (Japanese寿 老人, Chinese寿 老人/寿 老人, Pinyin Shou Lǎorén ) is a revered in Japan and China deity who is assigned to the seven lucky gods ( Shichi Fukujin ). He is a god of wisdom and learning, patron of science and in particular symbol for a long life.
He is often depicted as a worthy -looking old man in Chinese scholar's garb. In his hands he holds a staff on which sometimes a gourd attached to the immortality herb of the Taoists. Frequently one of its attributes is a scroll that he holds in one hand or secured to the floor and on the life age of people can be found; frequently it is shown with a leaf fan in hand. In pictures Jurojin is usually accompanied by a black deer ( Nihonjika ), but also representations with the " ten thousand years Turtle " are known. Both animals are also a symbol of long life.
Jurōjins meaning and outward appearance is similar to that of Fukurokuju. However, they can be easily distinguished from each other by the huge, elongated head Fukurokujus.
