Jusepe de Ribera

Jusepe de Ribera ( born January 12, 1591 in Xativa, Valencia Province, † September 2, 1652 in Naples) was a native of Spain painter who worked in Naples the Baroque period. Because of his background, he was also Italian " lo Spagnoletto " ( "the little Spaniard " ) called. His naturalistic style influenced the development of a renewed style of painting in Naples, its agent, such as Ribera and his students and painters are summarized from other workshops of the city as the Neapolitan school.

Life

Ribera first learned at the Francesc Ribalta in Valencia, then went to Naples, studied in Rome the works of Raphael and the Carracci and Parma and Modena by Antonio da Correggio. In Naples, he formed after Caravaggio's works.

His Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew earned him the post of court painter to the Duke of Osuna, viceroy to Naples. He became in 1630 a member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, and the pope gave him the Order of Christ in 1644. Ribera died 1652 in Naples.

Ribera is next to Caravaggio 's most important Naturalist of the Neapolitan school of painting; he is even more energetic than this, and his chiaroscuro is of the highest power. Due to a dark radiopaque many of his images whilst preserving the original large coloristic appeal. He was drawn especially for the representation of the horrible and terrifying, the most effective are his images of torture and similar materials; with fondness he painted busts of old, bony hermits, saints, etc., in which he was conspicuous by his anatomical accuracy.
