Founded in 1995, The Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System ( JPATS, colloquially Con Air ) is a U.S. organization of the United States Marshals Service. Your job is to transport prisoners from the so-called Federal Prisoners ( Federal Inmates ) and others, for which an exclusive government's own " airline" is maintained. The JPATS emerged from the National Prisoner Transportation System of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Tasks and activities

The JPATS transported convicted criminals on behalf of the Federal Bureau of Prisons as well as illegal aliens in aircraft with a high safety standard. As well as flying prisoners are transported through the JPATS also by bus or van, if a flight is not possible.

Flight operations

The JPATS operates four Boeing 727 and McDonnell Douglas MD four -83. In addition, also be chartered small aircraft. There are transported over 350,000 prisoners annually.

The flight plan, the aircraft used and the route to be kept secret in order to prevent an escape or liberation of prisoners. The prisoners are transported handcuffed continuously on the feet, hands and hips. The prisoners may only speak when they are asked by officials or prompted. Flight attendants are exclusively uniformed U.S. Marshals, 15 in each airplane. Private aircraft have no inscription and painted white, the charters do not wear JPATS or U.S. Marshals identification.

Others

  • As for the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, all non-military flights were prevented in the airspace of the United States by the FAA, the JPATS the further flying was allowed as the only civilian " airline".
  • The movie from 1997 Con Air with Nicolas Cage in the lead role has a mutiny aboard a flight of JPATS as a theme ( in the film is a Fairchild C -123 shown, this model is used in the real world but not of the JPATS ).
