Justina Casagli

Justina Kristina Casagli ( born Wässelius; born October 4, 1794 in Stockholm, † 1841 in Parma) was a Swedish opera singer.

Life

Justina Casagli was born as the eighth child of a Tapisseriefabrikanten in Stockholm. Her older sister, Marie Jeannette Wässelius, was also a singer. From 1805 she studied at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.

In February 1812, she married the dancer Casagli Lodovico ( 1769-1831 ) and performed under the name Casagli since this time.

In April 1812 she was engaged at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. Your first stage achievements came in operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. She sang, among others, Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Papagena in The Magic Flute. Contemporary reviews praised her beautiful and flexible voice, her attractive looks and charm as a stage actress. 1818 she left with her husband, Sweden and went to Italy, where she lived in the subsequent period and mainly occurred. She sang there in 1820 in Turin in the opera La Cenerentola by Rossini. The performance was played 28 times en-suite and has been for Casagli to a triumphant success. In 1827 she was appointed as the first Swedish singer for life at the National Theatre in Munich. After the death of her husband Casagli returned in 1831, first back to Sweden. However, there was no new commitment at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. The then director of the opera, Count Lagerbjelke, feared that her voice was now consumed. In addition, their place was now occupied elsewhere with soprano Henriette Widerberg.

Casagli then went back to Italy and lived in Parma. Contemporary sources indicate that she threw herself in 1841 in a fit of depression, which was probably triggered by financial problems from a window and committed suicide.
