Juva
Juva [ juʋɑ ] ( historically Jukainen, Swedish historically Jockas ) is a municipality with 6789 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in eastern Finland. It is located in the countryside Savo, 40 km east of the town of Mikkeli and Savonlinna 55 km west of state road 5 Juva is exclusively Finnish speakers.
Juva has existed since 1442 as a parish and is one of the oldest communities of Eastern Finland. Originally, the municipality included large parts of the countryside Savo, including the territories of present-day cities of Kuopio and Pieksämäki. As a political community in its present form consists Juva since 1868.
Juva is still marked mainly by the agriculture and forestry, small businesses, among other things, the food and paper industry settled only in the 1970s. Many of the inhabitants of Juva work in the nearby towns of Savonlinna, Mikkeli, and Varkaus Pieksämäki. Of increasing importance is tourism. In summer the population swells considerably when Finns take their summer houses mainly from the cities of the country. Altogether, there are more than 2,000 such Juva Mökkis.
The parish church of Juva was built in 1863 according to plans by Ernst Lohrmann and Carl Albert Edelfelt.
