Jyri Kjäll

Jyri Kjäll ( born January 13, 1969 in Seinäjoki ) is a former Finnish boxer. Kjäll was bronze medalist at the European Championships in 1992 and the 1992 Olympics and silver medalist at the World Championships in 1993.

Career

Amateur

Kjäll was Finnish champion in the light welterweight ( -63.5 kg ) in the years 1990-1993 and welterweight in 1994.

Won the 1990 Scandinavian Championships, but different at the European Championships the following year in the first fight against Soeren Soendergaard, Denmark (18-15 ). In the same year he reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Sydney, which he compared Candelario Duvergel, Cuba ( 32:3 ), lost.

1992 Kjäll defended his title at the Nordic Championships and won the European Championships in the same year the bronze medal. He lost the semi-final against the eventual WBC champion Michele Piccirillo, Italy ( 10:3 ). With this first international podium to Kjäll qualified for the 1992 Olympics, in which he claimed victories over Sergio Rey, Spain ( RSC 1 ), Michele Piccirillo, and Laszlo Szucs ( 12:5 ), Hungary ( 9:1) reached the semi-finals. In this he met the future Olympic champion Héctor Vinent, Cuba, and had to give this beaten with 13:3.

At the World Championships in 1993 Kjäll confirmed his good form and reached four wins among others about Leonard Doroftei, Romania ( 8:4 ), and Oleg Saitow, Russia ( 8:5 ), the finale. Here he met again on Vinent to this but had to admit defeat again ( 7:1).

Professional

In 1994 Kjäll turned professional, but had little success. Although he lost only one of 24 fights - against Juan Carlos Candelo, Colombia ( TKO 1 ) - but never had a major title fight. Kyäll considered one of the best Finnish boxer of all time.

Today Kjäll lives in Harjavalta and works for the city administration.
