K-8 (missile)

The Kaliningrad K -8 ( Isdelije 24R ) is a Soviet air - to-air missile with the NATO designation AA -3 ' Anab '.

History

The development of the designed for medium-range missile began in 1955. It existed both versions with infrared steering and those with semi-active radar guidance. 1961 version R -8M was (better known as R -98) introduced. The last version was known as the R- 98M1 (NATO 'Advanced Anab ') and was used from 1973. This was the main weapon system in the hunters Su -15 and Yak- 28th They remained until the withdrawal of such aircraft beginning of the 1990s in use.

On 1 September 1983 fired a Su -15 two missiles of this type on a Boeing 747-200 of Korean Airlines. This then crashed west of Sakhalin Island into the sea, all 269 passengers were killed (see Korean Airlines Flight 007).
