On February 29, 1992 at 10:15 clock The cable channel went as an entertainment division program on the air. The first mission was the British film A new spirit at Castle Rathbarney (Happy ever after, 1954) with David Niven. Advertising slogan of the station was " good entertainment in the cable channel "; when accompanying a clip of explosions and violence on television impaired audience was shown, then discovered the cable channel with his " clean" program and relaxed. In fact, the program of the cable channel was initially primarily of older films. The sender wanted to distance themselves from the so lurid program other private channels. The cable channel could be received at this time exclusively via the cable connections of the German Post Office (1994-99 German Telekom). Although the transmitter sent via the satellite Eutelsat, but the transmission format has been changed to D2 - MAC and also coded shortly afterwards by means of the encryption method EUROCRYPT a few months after first broadcast. With the cable channel wanted the German Telekom, which was then alone owns the major cable networks, make their offer over the then rapidly growing DTH attractive. The cable channel was a joint venture between the Kirch Group and Deutsche Telekom, the most ancient parts of the program ( movies, series ) came from the television archives of film dealer Leo Kirch. Only later did the non-secure reception via satellite (Astra) was possible. ProSieben, then a company of the Kirch Group was involved at this time with 45 percent of the cable channel.

On August 21, 1997, the cable 1 logo had to be redesigned due to an action of the ARD. The ARD sat in court with the view through that the appearance of trapped in the cable symbol " 1" could lead to confusion with the First logo of the public television station. As a precaution, the "1" from the logo has been removed; remained a " stub " right in the middle of the emblem. After many years of litigation brought by the ARD was finally dismissed on all counts in October 1999 and the logo got its " 1".
