Käbi Laretei

Käbi Laretei (* July 14, 1922 in Tartu) is an Estonian pianist.

Early years

Käbi Laretei was born as the youngest daughter of the Estonian politician and diplomat Henry Laretei ( 1892-1973 ). Because of the professional activities of her father, she spent the early years 1926-1928 in Moscow and from 1928 to 1930 in Kaunas. From 1936 to 1940 she studied piano at the Estonian Music Academy in Tallinn. Her father was Henry Laretei 1940 at the Soviet occupation of Estonia Estonian ambassador in Stockholm. With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the family remained in exile in Sweden.

Pianist

From 1947 to 1950 Käbi Laretei studied composition with the likewise exiled Estonian composer Eduard Tubin and piano with Gottfried Boon and Annie Fischer. Her debut as a pianist she had in 1946 at the Konzerthaus of Stockholm.

Especially since the early 1960s had Käbi Laretei great success as a concert pianist, including in the UK, Germany, Sweden and the USA. They also appeared at Carnegie Hall and the White House.

Ingmar Bergman

From 1950 to 1959 she was the principal conductor of Gävleborg läns Orkesterförening, Gunnar Stärn ( 1922-2011 ), married. In 1959 she married the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. She was musical consultant and composer for some of Bergman's films ( including Herbstsonate and Face to Face ) and played a small role in Fanny and Alexander.
