Kagoshima Prefecture

The Kagoshima Prefecture (Japanese鹿 児 岛 県, Kagoshima - ken) is a prefecture of Japan. It is located in the region of Kyushu on the island of Kyushu. Seat of the prefectural government is the city of Kagoshima.

Politics and Administration

Governor of Kagoshima since 2004 Yuichiro Ito, a former official of the central government. In the gubernatorial election in July 2012, he was re-elected ( non-communist ) Allparteienkandidat (LDP, DPJ, Kōmeitō, NVP ), with approximately 66 % of the vote against the opponents of nuclear power Yoshitaka Mukohara for a third term. A major campaign issue was supported by Itō restarting the nuclear power plant Sendai in the northwest of the prefecture. The JCP had renounced in favor Mukoharas on its own rival candidates.

In the 51- member parliament, the Liberal Democratic Party defended in the elections in April 2011 with 32 members, an absolute majority.

In the House of Representatives of the National Parliament Kagoshima is represented since the 2012 elections by four Liberal Democrats and Takeshi Noma of the now defunct New People's Party. In the Senate, represented since 2001, when the number of mandates for Kagoshima two was reduced to one per election, Liberal Democrats throughout the prefecture.

With a " financial strength index " ( zaiseiryoku Shisu ) 0.3 (fiscal year 2009) Kagoshima is financially weaker prefectures of the country.

Structural reform

Since October 2004 in Kagoshima, as in all other prefectures instead of a structural reform that primarily pursues a reduction of the administrative units by merging. Thus, the prefectural capital has incorporated some suburbs, and various cities and towns were merged. The process is not yet complete.
