Kai Wessel

Kai Wessel ( born 1964 in Hamburg ) is a German countertenor, composer and music educator.

Kai Wessel began as a singer in various school choirs. At the Christ Church of Hamburg -Wandsbek he sang as a boy soprano. Until his studies, he was a chorister. He also took piano and organ lessons. Actually Wessel just wanted to study composition. But his focus was the vocal training as a countertenor. He also studied historical performance practice and made his theory teacher exams. This was followed by the composition diploma.

In 1984 he made ​​his first appearance as a countertenor in Flensburg. In 1988 he sang his first operatic role at the Stadttheater Freiburg. In addition to his guest appearances in operas Wessel sees one of his musical focus in the interpretation of Bach's music. Despite his many guest appearances, he still finds time for his own compositions. At the Academy of Music and Dance Cologne Kai Wessel has been a professor for voice and historical performance practice.
